Property & Detention Division

The Property and Detention Division is comprised of the Property Storage Unit, the Joint Processing Center Unit, and the Juvenile Intake Unit.                

Property Storage Unit

The Property Storage Unit is the lead accountability agent for the management, preservation, and control of property and evidence. The division’s mission is to provide accountability and service to citizens, law enforcement officials, and prosecutors, who rely on the evidence and goods stored, maintained, and tracked by the division. The division also facilitates surplus/salvage services for HPD.

The division’s primary operational units include:

Intake, a 24/7 operation that allows the department personnel to tag or retrieve evidence;
Property Disposition and Property Disposal, which work closely with the District Attorney’s office and courts to determine what evidence and property can be processed for disposal, then retrieves and disposes of items approved for disposal in accordance with state law and city ordinance.

Found ABandoned and Unclaimed Property

The Houston Police Department now provides online public notice of Found, Abandoned and Unclaimed Property in accordance with Article 18.17 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

How to retrieve evidentiary property (Citizens only)
Evidentiary items are items that were seized due to a criminal investigation (Not safe keeping or found property). These items require prior approval before release. The Property Division can ONLY release property with a court order or when a Property Release Form is authorized by an investigator from the division investigating your case. (Please see steps 1-3 below).

Step 1: If you do not have a court order for the property, you MUST make contact with an investigator within the division associated with the offense type to determine whether the property is authorized for release. The phone number and email for each unit is listed under Investigative Division Contacts.

Step 2: Once the investigator notifies you that the property release form has been sent to the property unit, you may proceed to the property storage unit located at 1202 Washington Avenue, Houston, Texas 77002 to pick up your property.

Step 3: You MUST bring current identification such as:

  • Any government ID, including official Police ID
  • State Issued ID (ex., Driver’s License or ID Card)
  • Student ID
  • Passports
  • Inmate ID

* If you do not have any of the aforementioned forms of identification, You must notify the investigator so they can relay the information to the property storage unit personnel.

Jail Safekeeping property
All safekeeping Property collected from the jail will be retained for the required duration in accordance with Article 18.17 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Upon release from the jail please bring the paperwork that was provided to you regarding the release of your property. If you no longer have the paperwork provided to you, you must present a valid form of identification, please review Step 3 under How to retrieve property.
